Early years activities

Early years activities

Your place in the world relates to families and food. The activities are developed from a personal perspective.

About our world relates to weather and probability. The time frames start with a single day.

The activities for the early years students are based around a personal perspective.

Each activity is prompted by simple questions likely to be of interest to younger students.

The Your place in the world activities involve collecting categorical data about family origins and preferred fruit. The data about the families is collected through discussion, and the data about food through the use of simple survey techniques. Students use a variety of methods to display the information collected: picture graphs, lists, tables, maps. They interpret the data to answer the question posed.

The About our world activities emphasise the interpretation of secondary data. Students name and order months and seasons, and relate the seasons to clothing, food and recreation. They identify outcomes of familiar weather events involving chance, and describe them using everyday language. There are many possible links to science.

There are supporting worksheets and maps available for download, links to helpful online resources plus ideas for extension. You can also download the online teaching notes.
