Contrasting the median and mean

Contrasting the median and mean

This activity is designed to help students distinguish between means and medians in symmetric and skewed data sets.

The Contrasting Medians and Means: Student Worksheet allows students to collect their own data sets, or they can use the data provided in Contrasting Medians and Means: Data.

You can also download the accompanying Contrasting Medians and Means: Teacher Notes.

The activity asks students to plot data in stacked dot plots, and compare and contrast the various measures of centre.

A similar activity using Australian prime ministers' heights and Mark Taylor's first innings scores is explained in Mean, Median and Mode.
