Bronwyn Parkin is part of the Programs and Resources Team in the Numeracy and Literacy Secretariat of the SA Department of Education. She has a long involvement in literacy education for Aboriginal students, from Early Years to Tertiary, and from remote Aboriginal communities to urban settings. Previous roles have included Language and Literacy advisor for the SA Aboriginal Lands schools, Lecturer in Aboriginal Education at the University of South Australia, research coordinator for the 'Deadly Writin', Readin' and Talkin' Project', and Middle Years Project Officer for the DECS Aboriginal Education Unit.
Her current position is manager of the SA Accelerated Literacy Program. Her Masters thesis was entitled 'Inclusive Literacy Education in an Urban Primary Classroom and Aboriginal Students' Responses'. Bronwyn is currently undertaking a PhD in Applied LInguistics, with the working title of 'Scaffolding Science'. Her study, drawing on the fields of linguistics and socio-cognitive psychology, focuses on the development of scientific language in Year 2/3 students in an educationally disadvantaged school. Her contribution to the Noarlunga Cluster of the Make it count project is in the area of effective scaffolding pedagogy for low socio-economic and Aboriginal students.
