Pattern block hexagons

Pattern block hexagons

This is a practical activity using patterns blocks which encourages students to think more inclusively about hexagons.

Students will need lots of pattern blocks to complete this activity.

If you do not have a large number of pattern blocks, you can download a series of pattern blocks sheets (46 KB PDF) and print them onto coloured paper.

Students use their pattern blocks to make

  • regular hexagons
  • irregular hexagons
  • convex irregular hexagons
  • non-convex irregular hexagons.

It is possible to build a hexagon that has equal sides but unequal angles.

You can download the Pattern blocks hexagons: Student worksheet which also has some suggestions for pattern block combinations if students run out of ideas.
