MAT Problem Solving Competition

MAT Problem Solving Competition

For more than 40 years, the Mathematical Association of Tasmania has conducted the MAT Problem Solving Competition for Tasmanian students in Years 7 to 12. In 2018, MAT extended the competition to include students in Years 5 and 6. Through this Competition, some outstanding Mathematics students have been identified. For other students, the competition has sparked an interest in Mathematics. The event consists of a set of mathematical problems which aim to test the student’s logic. There are normally 10 - 12 questions for each of the four divisions (Primary - Years 5 & 6; Junior Secondary - Years 7 & 8; Upper Secondary - Years 9 & 10; Senior Secondary - Years 11 & 12) which are undertaken within a two-hour time-frame.

Overall there was a very high standard of scripts in 2019 with the Intermediate division very competitive for placings. The standard was certainly higher than previous years with some excellent approaches. The questions that involved the logic puzzle (men and professions) and the cost of a cake were almost universally answered well but some provided little or no information as to how the solution was found.
Priyanna Kumrai and Charlie Gregg again placed 1st and 2nd in the Primary Division but in the opposite order to 2018.
